Ousseynou's journey began in the coastal city of Saint-Louis, Senegal, where he worked as a fisherman. However, a crisis in the local fishing industry prompted him and his brother to embark on a perilous voyage across the Atlantic, seeking a new life in the Canary Islands.
The crossing was a harrowing experience, marked by extreme thirst, panic, and the tragic loss of his brother and many others at sea. Yet, amidst this darkness, a glimmer of hope emerged as Ousseynou arrived in Gran Canaria, welcomed by a warm and generous local community.
"It was a new beginning," Ousseynou reflects. "A place where I could start over, where I was given a chance."
His story, shared with Pope Francis in a heartfelt letter, moved the pontiff deeply. Pope Francis had made migration a defining priority of his pontificate, and Ousseynou's invitation to visit the Canary Islands resonated strongly with him.
Unfortunately, illness and, ultimately, Pope Francis' death prevented the visit from taking place. However, his successor, Pope Leo XIV, has taken up the mantle, fulfilling the wishes of his predecessor by embarking on an Apostolic Journey to Spain, which will include a visit to the Canary Islands on June 11th and 12th.
Ousseynou, now a chef working long hours in a hotel kitchen, eagerly anticipates the Pope's arrival. He hopes to convey a simple yet powerful message: "I would like to ask him to help us do more for migrants who die along the journey."
"People like my brother, who wanted to come here but never made it," he explains. "Their stories, their struggles, and their sacrifices should not be forgotten."
